Books are like pies. Each pie has some unique ingredients, but there is a core group of ingredients that is common to all pies (with few exceptions). Similarly, the majority of fiction stories contain a set of characteristics called the "Elements of Fiction." These elements include a protagonist, a plot, a setting, a conflict, exposition, climax, and others. The nature of these "ingredients" and the way they interact determine the character of the story.
