Coriolis Effect Balloon Lab

The Coriolis Effect is a very challenging scientific concept to understand, and it is hard for kids to wrap their brains around it when it's so far removed from their classroom and lives. This hands-on lab activity allows students to model the Coriolis Effect - feel and see it happen right before their eyes. Students use balloons as the Earth and draw the winds as the balloon earths spin on their axis. They can see the Coriolis Effect happen and see the directions that the winds blow on both the

Bottle Biosphere / Bottle Biome Lesson, Instructions, and Student Packet

This is such an AWESOME and hands-on project that I do with my students the last couple of weeks of the school year as we complete our ecology unit. The kids always tell me that THIS was their favorite science memory of the year! In this document, you will have detailed lesson plan that introduces the idea of biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) factors and how they are ALL important in an ecosystem. The objective for students is: The Student Will Be Able To PLAN, DESIGN, and COMMUNICATE a s

Research project that has students working cooperatively to research an environmental issue. Includes project guidelines, rubric for grading, suggested websites and a note-taking sheet with key questions for students. Students have the flexibility of presentation style. To make grading fair, I make the individual's work count for a large part of the grade and keep the group grade smaller. Suitable for lower levels or can be modified for honors students by increasing detail of fact sheet require

Earth's Natural Resources Research Project

A research project for students to research and gain a deeper understanding of natural resources and the current problems facing the world. Includes requirements, sample project ideas, and brainstorming topics.Standard:(iii) Energy resources are available on a renewable, nonrenewable, or indefinite basis. Understanding the origins and uses of these resources enables informed decision making. Students should consider the ethical/social issues surrounding Earth's natural energy resources, while lo

Topography of the Ocean Floor Earth Science Project

This is a project I usually give as extra-credit, but depeding on the socio-economic status of your stuents, you could very well require everyone to create a model showing the major features of the ocean floor. The students really love doing projects like this. So, I always like to have something extra credit or hands-on for the higher order thinking students. I just know that times are tough for a lot of people and don't feel comfortable requiring them to go out and by all of these materia

Alternative Energy Research Project/ Poster

Objective: Students will research an alternative source of energy and sharing the advantages and disadvantages of it. Instructions for students: Your group will be assigned a form of alternative energy (wind power, solar power, nuclear energy, geothermal energy, hydroelectric, fuel cells, etc). You must research this source of energy. Use the internet, electronic databases, the library, or interviews. Then, summarize the information you have gathered into three sections: (1) A brief description

Storms Project

In this project, students create a powerpoint about the major severe storms (hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, thunderstorms, winter storms) and additional severe weather issues (fire spouts, waterspouts, wildfires, el nino, la nina, etc.) The project activity guide includes a checklist of requirements for each section. For each storm, students will need to explain how it forms, where it forms, weather associated, a well-known storm story, how to prepare/safety. This activity is a great way for s

STEM Engineering for Elementary GATE - Wind Power, Windmills, and Wind

Two challenging but age-appropriate engineering projects highlight this unit. If you’ve taught my other STEM units, however, you know they’re not simply building projects. We’re thinking, learning science concepts, developing explanations, applying math and non-fiction reading skills, and bringing a wide variety of areas into a unit. But let’s not take lightly how cool it is to build and experiment with a cool mini glider and a working windmill! As usual, we have ready-to-print activity shee

Students color and hide 3 paper butterflies around the classroom. They use colored pencils, crayons and markers to provide camouflage so the butterfly blends in with its natural environment. After 2-3 days of creating and preparing, students get an opportunity to hide their butterfiles. The instructor acts as the predator to find as many butterflies as possible. After 2 trips aroudnd the classroom, any butterflies that have not yet been discovered are revealed by their creators. Prizes are

Students apply their knowledge of climate zones to a particular region of the world. They examine temperature, precipitation, vegetation and life in that region of the world. They create a flyer and display the information in an aesthetically pleasing manner. Students enjoyed the artistic aspects of the project. I took 2 days with laptops in the classroom and students finished at home for the homework on the second day. Great to hang in classroom or hallway. Common core aligned.

Students come in and all place their right shoes into a large pile. They then use the provided template to create a dichotomous key that separates the shoes into smaller and smaller piles based on their charateristics until all students have their shoes back. The next day, repeat using the already created dichotomous key and discuss why it didn't work the next day (students wearing different shoes have introduced "new" organisms into the environment).
