Scale model of the Solar System
During this activity students will calculate the scale distances for each of the planets makes 93,000,000 miles=1 cm. Then students will use their rounded results to create a poster that represents the scale distances of the planets. Once my students were done I let them decorate with beads, string, and glitter! Once they complete their posters they will complete conclusion questions as a group.

Life Cycle of A Star Project - Astronomy Baby Book
Students learn about the life cycle of stars by creating a baby book for a new born star that traces its life cycle from birth until death. The "family tree" of stars is also explored so students are exposed to different type of stars.

This an easy and fun project to complete with an astronomy unit. Students really enjoy this activity! The task is to construct a brochure advertising a planet of their choice for a vacation getaway. Since most planets can't support life, they have to be creative and decide ways to make it a fun vacation spot.

Astronomy Unit Assessment Project: Build a Space Colony Packet
In years past, I have given students the option to either do a VERY lengthy study guide packet and take home essay test on their own, or create a scale model, space colony, that addresses the variables they research in this packet. I generally have allowed students to work in small groups of 2-4 on this project (It's a big under taking!), and I require that the entire model be made from at least 50% recycled materials!
