Compass Animals
Students can choose between 6 different animals to construct completely out of circles. By constructing their animals they are practicing measuring with a ruler (using both metric and English measurements) and using a compass. This is also great review for circle vocabulary such as radius and diameter.
This activity includes the instructions for a bear, panda, turtle, pig, frog, and lady bug. Each animal has the dimensions for all body parts.

Pythagorean Spiral project.
The Pythagorean spiral project uses the Pythagorean Theorem to create a beautiful spiral if done correctly. This can be used from Pre-Algebra all the way to graduation as a good way to teach the Pythagorean Theorem as well as constructions. Have the student decorate the spiral after to add some flare to their work!

Skittles Proportion Activity
Students are to be provided a bag of skittles. They are going to use proportions and ratios to determine if there are the same number/ratio of each color in all different sized bags.
I had students work in groups of 2 for this activity. Within the activity I broke it up into three different sections; a pre-lab, lab, and post-lab portion. Students make initial guesses/hypothesis, test out their theory, use proportions and ratios to analyze their results and graph data.

Modeling one step linear equations project
This project is great for students to complete as a cumulative review to modeling one step linear equations (SOL 6.18). This project allows students to be creative while practicing modeling one step linear equations using concrete materials. Students are also required to show how they solved for the variable. This is a math project for upper elementary or middle school students.
Students inherit a large sum of money and must spend it all in a short amount of time. This unit covers banking, discounts, and sales tax. I use this with my middle school special education math class and with certain accommodations, my students do very well with the assignment and like it a lot. Area of the Hand Project
This activity has students measure the area and perimeter of their hands (an irregular shaped object).
First, students trace their hand on graph paper. Next, they count the number of boxes inside of their hand for the area. Then, they cut a piece of string and re-trace their hand with the string. Lastly, they lay the string flat and measure it with a ruler. This is the perimeter.
Afterwards, I have students color and decorate their hand, cut it out and write their measurements on it.
