They also were to include a short summary of the book and 3-4 words that my have been new or challenging. Teach Characterization with Video Clips (Disney, Pixar, etc.)

By middle school, students should begin to develop skills in analyzing author craft. One of the easiest ways to introduce kids to the "craft moves" an author makes is through teaching characterization. All ten words should be words none of the students have seen before, but even my lowest readers have been able to determine the meaning based on the clues. This worksheet took my students about 20 minutes to complete, on average.

I did this with my class by reading it aloud, then assigning each small group a stanza to decipher. I reminded them that they were looking for the "big meaning" and not to stress over each individual word since many were made up in the first place!
