FREE Math Pre-Assessment of Basic Skills: Grades 6-8
This is a FREE Math Pre-Assessment that I use in my Grade 7 classroom. It looks at basic skills - multiplication, division, rounding, place value, area, fractions, percents, decimals etc. It's surprising how many students even in Grade 8 or 9 who struggle with long division, for example. This short pre-assessment gives you a starting place for working with your students in September.

Multiplication Animal Challenge
This Mulitplication Challenge can be used to quiz your students on their multiplication facts. Print the quiz on the front and print the answer key --upside down-- on the back of the paper. This allows students to check thier own answers by simply folding the bottom or the top of the paper over to compare thier answers to the key. A little homework is available on the backside for students to practice just those facts that give them trouble.

Subtract and Add with Number Bonds -Singapore Math Worksheet
You can give the students the work sheets as they are or make a template for them to make their own subtraction and addition number bonds.
On the Number Bond and Subtraction Sentence template with the cubes, cross out some of the cubes for each problem. Copy this worksheet and have the children write number bonds and subtraction sentences to correspond with the cubes. Emphasize that the greatest number must be written first in a subtraction sentence.

Post all 15 questions around your classroom or hallway. Have each student or group of 2-3 students choose one problem to start at. After they have solved the question, have them search for their answer. When they find the answer, that is the next problem they solve. They continue this process until they return to their original question. This scavenger hunt includes writing and evaluating algebraic expressions.
