Context Clues Practice

This worksheet includes ten multiple-choice questions and an answer key. Students have to underline clues that help them determine the meaning of the unusual English words and then choose the best answer from the four choices. All ten words should be words none of the students have seen before, but even my lowest readers have been able to determine the meaning based on the clues. This worksheet took my students about 20 minutes to complete, on average.

Context Clues activity using Jabberwocky

This reproducible uses Alice Carroll's Jabberwocky poem to teach context clues. Students use context clues to decide the meaning of difficult and made up words. I did this with my class by reading it aloud, then assigning each small group a stanza to decipher. I reminded them that they were looking for the "big meaning" and not to stress over each individual word since many were made up in the first place!

I created my own unit for Animal Farm by George Orwell. I have my own version of a double entry journal that includes "reading response" prompts for the students when they are stuck. It also asks them to think about what they are noting, such as characterization, descriptive language, setting, etc. I then have a focus for each chapter and a journal/connection question that goes along with it. These daily "chapter activities" get the students to write in more detail regarding a specific literary

Many of my students were struggling with learning and recognizing the differences between the six nonfiction text structures. So, I rewrote Iggy Azalea's "Fancy" to include information about cause and effect, question and answer, description, problem and solution, compare and contrast, and chronological order/sequence. Enjoy! Also, I changed "I.G.G.Y." to M.U.L.E because our school mascot is the mule. You could change that part to any four letter word or team you'd like.

This is great practice for ESL students or students struggling with when to make a vowel sound long or short. Many of the words on the list are common CVC words, -ght words, and 4 letter words ending with e. My new ESL students love using highlighters to signal sounds. After they highlight the words, they go back and read them aloud. After using this worksheet, you can refer back to this list when reading passages or use as an assessment.
