Combining Like Terms Partner Activity

In this activity, students will work with a partner to complete 15 practice problems involving combining like terms. This is similar to a think, pair, share activity. Students should have knowledge of variables and integers before completing this activity. Each student solves his or her own problem. Both problems are different, but the answers are the same. This is a great way to practice combining like terms! The answer key is included along with a student handout. You can also edit as n

As a High School Math teacher I have witnessed my students struggle with solving equations. I created this quick supplemental lesson to aid my classes with this concept during my lesson on solving a system of equations with substitution. It allows me to teach (reteach) on a basic level and build it up. Then I can immediately hand out the assessment and get a quick look at comprehension. I also kept it simple for printing purposes!

On the first day of school this year I showed my students a web of 8 mathematical things about myself. Instead of just introducing myself, they had to solve the math problems to figure out things about myself. Afterwards, they then created their own math webs showcasing Eight Math Things about themselves. It was an awesome first day activity and great review of PEMDAS! :) This could be adapted for all subjects - the document is blank but the web with 8 spaces is all you really need! Fill it

PEMDAS Order of Operations Signs

My students have no trouble remembering PEMDAS, and they have no trouble remembering " Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally." But some of them have a TERRIBLE time remembering what those letters stand for. So I made these signs which incorporate the operator into the visual, to help them connect PEMDAS to its actual purpose. You could easily make this yourself, but why bother when I've already done it? It's helped me, and I hope it helps you too! This is just a small thing, and so it's free.

Have different kids from each class pick a number 1-9. Each class should have 4 different digits. Make a poster of each for your wall. Have a running contest between classes. Ask students to use those digits to find all of the numbers from 1-100. They can use +, -, *, /, and (). They can use one of their digits as an exponent. You might want to include the digit 2 in each class for this purpose. I allowed them to use the square root as well, even though technically it is a rational expon

I use this resource (in combination with my Inverse Process Diagrams) to help students visualize how expressions build. This sets students up for success for when they need to apply inverse operations to reverse the process and isolate the unknown. It has been well received by my students especially since it is design to start the algebraic conversation with topics they are relatively familiar with. It is a word document so you are welcome to edit this as you please.

Order of Operations

Explaining to students how to use the Order of Operations to simplify complicated-looking algebraic expressions can be a daunting exercise at times. I have attempted to make the process of understanding as simple as possible and hope that my input would be beneficial to those students who experience problems comprehending mathematical concepts.
