Middle Ages Project

This project is designed for 8th graders studying the Middle Ages. The project is designed so that kids get to pick and choose different activitites, each worth a different number of points. They essentially pick from a list of mini projects to design their own project. It would work for English and/or history classes and is easy to adapt. It was popular with students and parents appreciated it too.

This highly entertaining and engaging mock trial will reinforce any lesson on the events leading up to and surrounding the creation of the Magna Carta. Students will create a courtroom and decide how King John will be remembered in history. I have successfully used this lesson with students in 3rd thru 12th grade. Additional activities are suggested.

Create Your Own 95 Theses

A great mini-activity for a unit on the Protestant Reformation or Martin Luther that encourages students to use their school's agenda or rulebook to create their own original list of "95 Theses". A great conclusion to this activity is having students "nail" their theses to the classroom door...as long as your building principle is OK with some contrastive criticism.

The Crusades | Guided reading | Lecture-free notes

Throughout my teaching career, I've tried to reduce as much lecturing as possible while ensuring that students don't miss out on important notes. That is why I created detailed guided readings to help students learn important content and vocabulary quickly and efficiently. By eliminating time spent going through PowerPoint lectures, I can focus more class time on meaningful activities and projects that reinforce the information they learn in each daily reading. This reading provides a quick overv

Written for AP European History, but can be used for any Middle Ages study. Your students will have a blast learning how the Catholic Church began losing power during the late Middle Ages. Various ideas for using this play include: (1) students can work in small groups of 4 and practice reading through each scene; (2) the entire class can put on the play; (3) small groups can act out individual scenes and compete to see which small group acts it out the best; or (4) students can write a one

Medieval Role Playing Activity

This is a group project that takes a single class period. This is the one lesson that students come back to me years later still laughing about how much fun it was. The students will be divided into small groups with a member of Medieval society assigned to them (Peasant, Pope Gregory, etc). The students will spend the first half of the class researching their assigned character. The fun begins with the second half of the class when I pretend to be Oprah and have them "on my show" one at a time

Advice for a Young Renaissance Prince - Machiavelli

This rich task puts students in the role of political advisers to a Renaissance prince. It invites them to consider different ways that rulers might exercise and consolidate power, in the tradition of the Italian Renaissance political philosopher Machiavelli. The handout provides a brief, imaginative, realistic context to help students assume their role and to understand some of the factors they need to consider. I like to arrange chairs around the room like a council chamber, with myself or

This is a set of 20 questions I developed to go along with a viewing of the film Luther, based on the life of Martin Luther. The document is a little over 4 pages long (I've included space where students can write their answers, so this is ready to be printed and handed out.) The questions challenge students to make personal connections, draw inferences, and analyze ideas and the expression of these ideas. Showing this film would work well in a history or English humanities class during a unit o

In this project, students read and create art projects based on the original Arabian Nights stories from Medieval Islam. This includes instructions for the different projects as well as a link to the different stories that students have an opportunity to analyze. The instructions indicate that the readings should be done as a group and the projects done independently, but either section could work as either format.
