Scientific Notation Student Notes

Created by
Haney Science
These notes coincide with the Scientific Notation PowerPoint that is also available. They allow students to build an understanding of what positive and negative coefficients mean, how to decide which coefficient to use, and how to multiply and divide numbers in scientific notation through comparison and practice. This lesson has worked well in my classroom to teach and review the basics of scientific notation.

Lab Report Template MIDDLE SCHOOL and HIGH SCHOOL Science

This is a lab template that is great for students 6th through 12th grade for all science investigations. The template guides students in making a lab report that is professional and accurate with the appropriate items in the appropriate sections. I have my 7th graders use this template and while it is challenging in the beginning of the year, but 8th grade they have it down, If you wanted to simplify it for your sped students, just remove some of the information. I have labs and activities for m

This fun murder mystery icebreaker is perfect for any high school classroom. Students will work as a group to be the first group to solve the murder! This activity is a student favorite. They will have lots of fun while also getting to know their classmates and practicing the Claims, Evidence, and Reasoning (CER) Model. As a teacher, this is an excellent way for you to study how your students work together. Who steps up as a leader? Who is quiet and reserved? Is anyone hesitant to contribute? Th

These notes coincide with the Experimental Design PowerPoint. It was designed to help my students with their mastery of the experimental design questions found in Objective 1: Nature of Science on the TAKS test in Texas. It helps students understand how to identify the independent and dependent variables, constants, hypothesis, control group and the conclusion. It also emphasizes that factors that can keep a hypothesis or conclusion from being valid (emotions, opinions, random sampling, and l

Here is a quick, traditional introduction to microscope lab. I wrote this for a newcomer ELL class that was just starting to move into science content. These are high school students with a wide variety of backgrounds, some with no formal education in their past and some that had attended private schools in their home country. This lab sheet has simple directions for students to draw what they see as they explored how to use a microscope. When I use this in my room we set out a selection of

This Lab/activity teaches how heat energy is transferred by convection using hot and cold water and density differences. Using the food coloring allows the students to see the flow of hot water out of the flask due to lower density and how the cold water stays in place due to higher density. Very good results are usually obtained as long as the students don't jiggle the beakers. Quick lab can easily be completed in a 40 minute period.

This can be used early in forensic science to differentiate between assumption, inductive and deductive reasoning. Definitions and examples are given for each subject. The students then read about an ancient case from China where reasoning played key role in finding a murderer. They have to discuss and answer questions as they read. Possible answers are provided. The last page just explains the purpose and why I started using items like this in class. This can be done as a group activity w
