Short Story Creative Project and Rubric
This creative project assignment was designed for a ninth grade English class, but could be adapted to a middle school ELA class as well. Students are required to choose an object of significance from a short story read and discussed in class (a list is provided on the assignment sheet, but can be edited). They must use basic materials at home to recreate the object, using textual evidence as a guide. Two different rubrics are included for grading flexibility.

I use Newsela for my AOWs since I can easily modify the levels of text. If you search "Quizzed Articles Only", those articles will have quizzes, also at the same varied lexile level as the text, always with four questions.
I use this rubric to assess my students on their weekly AoWs. I actually have entered this information into ForAllRubrics for even faster assessing.
