Many of my students were struggling with learning and recognizing the differences between the six nonfiction text structures. So, I rewrote Iggy Azalea's "Fancy" to include information about cause and effect, question and answer, description, problem and solution, compare and contrast, and chronological order/sequence. Literary Devices in Song Lyrics
Distribute assignment to students as it has a glossary of literary terms and their definition on it.
Upon playing two songs for the class (Monster by Eminem and Gone, Gone, Gone by Phillips Phillips) ask students to search the lyrics for literary devices, using the glossary on their assignment. As a class, discuss the devices that were found. Many lyrics can apply to multiple devices!

The Cay Song Analysis & Text-Text Connection Assignment
Students listen to the song "Amazing Grace" (I use the Leann Rimes version on YouTube) and read the lyrics. They highlight a "snippet" (anything from a word to 2 sentences) that strikes them. Unsure of a Word Song (to the tune of If You're Happy and You Know It)
This is a great song to teach at the beginning of the year. Segmentation of phonemes is a hard thing to teach children. Tapping out the sounds of a word to decode it is a strategy I use frequently. I like to pair this song with fun wands or pencils with toppers so they can tap on the table the way they would if they tap the sounds out. Sing the song to help your students remember a great decoding strategy and include movement with the wand for a sure memory

Creating Relevance with Letters to a Young Poet
Students love to use music in lessons, which is why this lesson was an amazing way to introduce "Letters to a Young Poet." Students started by listening to the song, "Let Nas Down" and then annotated the text excerpt from the song during their bellringer. Together, they determined the central idea of the song. This activity flowed right into the premise of "Letters to a Young Poet" because students were eager to find and analyze the pieces of advice one artist offered to another.

Inferring Using Music
Help students practice the skill of inferring in a more engaging way using music. The song lyrics "Hazard" by Richard Marx leave lots of room for making inferences about the characters involved in the song. After teaching what an inference is, use these questions (along with song lyrics) to have students make inferences about what is happening in the song. Video can be used too, but there is a scene in the video that teachers may or may not feel comfortable using.
