Paired Passage- Poetry, Song Lyric Questions for "Mother to Son" and "Dear Mama"
This assignment is a set of 8 response questions for a paired reading of "Mother to Son" poem by Langston Hughes and "Dear Mama" song by Tupac Shakur. Poem and song lyrics are not included due to copyright restrictions, but can easily be found online.
Each question asks for a written response that includes text evidence. I suggest using this as a two-day activity in which students spend the first day doing close-readings of both the poem and the song lyrics, and the second day spent writing the

I use "Dear John" and "Would've Could've Should've" to practice annotating, pulling out close reading and word-level details to prove a theme. I teach Honors 10 English. We started doing a little Tone Analysis practice, and I decided to practice with Taylor Swift's "The Archer". The document has the lyrics, annotations, and an example timed write paragraph (I only used 30 minutes to write). We were also practicing for timed writes, so I modelled writing something the same time they would have.

Fences by August Wilson Activity using Music!
This lesson uses two songs - Umbrella by Rhianna and Everything She Does is Magic by The Police. Students compare/contrast the symbol of the umbrella in both songs and attribute it to how it relates to the relationship between Rose and Troy in Fences. Additionally, there is a second page committed solely to symbolism in Fences. Great lesson! The kids love the music and comparing it to the text.
