Music Integrated Literacy Lesson: Feel the Beat with Tortoise and the Hare
This literacy with music integrated lesson takes around 45 minutes to complete. This is an extension of previous learning about rhythm, beat, and music tempo. The lesson has students singing to the Aesop’s fable: The Tortoise and the Hare's characters according to how fast or slow they are going. This is a great literacy lesson that can incorporate music into your classroom as well as go over morals and sayings such as slow and steady wins the race.

Mystery Walker Poster
This is a variation of a mystery walker poster. I have it laminated and hanging right by the door, along with a set of popsicle sticks with each student's name. Whenever we line up to leave the classroom I pull a stick, but keep the name to myself. I watch that student while they are in line. This is a song I wrote the night my son was born. It is sung to the tune "Frere Jacques". It is a simple, comforting song, that incorporates the child's name as well as the names of those who love him/her so much! Please note: the words "love" and "baby" are used in this song. An ACHIEVEMENT Chant
This chant is how I begin class everyday. Not only is it a great way for the kids to get motivated for class (and teach them to spell the word achievement), but it's a great procedure for beginning a class.
We pat, pat (our desks), and clap, clap (our hands) in rhythm through the chant. The kids love it and so do I.
It's also a great way to raise motivation before a test or big assessment, as well!

This is a song written to the tune of The Battle Hymn of the Republic. It is a song that explains what a bully is and that winners are not bullies. We sing this song at our school weekly, substituting our mascot (Broncos) in place of winners, thus becoming Broncos are not Bullies. You could do that for your school mascot also. This song is fun to sing and promotes respect.

This song is sung to the tune of the Brownie song from Girl Scouts. I teach it to kindergarten students on the first day of school to create a sense of class community and identity as a kindergartener. I also send a hard copy home with students so they can sing and share the song with their families. You could easily adapt the song for preschool or any other grade level.

These are the songs and fingerplays used in the PATHS preschool/kindergarten program.
They are in a word document, and set up to print on to index cards. I laminated the cards to make them durable.
I have just put them together from the PATHS manual. I am not the writer of any of the songs and tried to credit individual authors on the card themselves, but the rest are by channing-bete publishing and for use in the PATHS program.
