Career Monthly Bils Circle Graph Project

In this project students draw a career and select 10 of their monthly bills. They then figure what percent of their monthly salary goes to each item and create a circle graph showing where their money goes. The file you will receive includes a rubric for the project, an accountability sheet, 24 "career cards", a list of choices for the 7 required and 3 choice items in the project, and teachers notes about how the project has been made successful in their class. It is a word document so any of th

Roller Coaster Design - Transformations of Functions

I created this project for my IB Approaches and Analysis Course. This is also useful for Algebra 2 and Pre-Calculus courses. All three courses heavily use transformations of functions and can apply the parent functions to this course. This 13 page document with calendar and table of contents took me at least 12 days to complete from beginning to end, but it was worth it for the students to engage in meaningful conversations.

This is an easy-to-implement project that I have used in my U.S. Government courses in the past, although it could be adapted for use in U.S. history or even an applied math course. The learning focus is to get students to make the connections from values to numbers and recognize that differing political perspectives can be seen in how the federal budget takes shape.

Area, Perimeter, and Budgeting: Create a Backyard Diorama

Given a budget and dimensions of a fictional "back yard", students will create their dream back yard. They must use the dimensions to find the area and perimeter, then they must shop. They have a budget, and must buy items (pool, swingset etc.) to put in their new back yards. Students not only must add the money, but they must calculate tax on purchases. When they plan it all out, they will build a shoe box diorama of their backyard using creativity and any materials they choose. After it is fin

Do you want a fun way to teach problem solving to your students? This 2 to 3 day unit plan will give you a fun and educational way to get your students to apply their problem solving knowledge. This unit is modeled after the hilarious book by Scieszka and Lane - "Math Curse". It can be taught as a stand alone unit or in conjuction with a problem solving unit that you currently use. It matches many common core math standards. This unit includes: Detailed plans worksheets rubric Why not check do

Math Task Rubric

This rubric is useful for grading math tasks completed in support of Common Core and the PARCC assessment. I left the document in a .doc file so that you can edit the wording for your grade level (this is the wording I used for 5th grade). This document is 4 pages long...each page is the exact same rubric. Print one page normal size and slip into a sheet protector for students to self-assess with a dry erase marker. Print 4 to a page and cut apart to grade students and attach to their work.

3D Objects and 2D Shapes Test Assessment Criteria ACARA Year 3 4 and 5 Australia

This is a test that can be used for Year 3, 4 or 5 Australian students to assess the ACARA outcomes for the strand Measurement and Geometry, 2D and 3D shapes. It is a WORD doc, so fully editable. My tests allow for the 5 point scale, so often have harder questions or sums to allow for the higher marks. Students are told these harder questions are optional. This assessment includes a criteria sheet with a 5 point scale. There is also a task where students build something, using 3D shapes and then

This menu project reinforces the application of tax and tip in a restaurant setting. Prior to having students complete this project, I went to local restaurants and asked for take-out menus. I then let students choose which restaurant menu they would like to use to complete the project. The students are asked to choose a drink, an appetizer, an entree, and a dessert from the menu, then fill in the Menu Project worksheet accordingly. A work space sheet is included that I have found helpful fo

Similarity Performance Task - Alternative Assessment

This was a performance task I gave to my geometry students after our unit on Similarity. *It could be used at multiple grade levels* It presents a real life scenario and requires students to use their knowledge of similarity to find lengths, perimeters, areas and volumes of similar figures. The task guides students to think of multiple solutions to the same problem and make conjectures about volumes of similar figures. This was created as a word document so it can be easily adapted and edited

Ratios in the Real World Project

This is a project that can be assigned to all of your students or just used as an independent project for advanced students. In this project, students are asked to research careers in which a person must use ratios. Once they have researched the career, they must identify how ratios are used. Then they will create an ad (job posting) from a company (real or made up) advertising a job in that career field. They must then create a resume for an applicant applying for the job. This is a great end of year research project for any math course at a multitude of grade levels! From start to end of presentations, this project took me two weeks to complete - I give specific dates for each goal and give a grade for completion of each goal. The points I gave are listed on the information sheet. I created this in Word and it can be edited to fit your classroom and your needs. Students are asked to research a famous mathematician, write a research paper and give a presentation.
