Annotation Rubric

When I found myself writing the same comments time after time, I created this rubric, which sped up my grading time considerably. I also have students use it to assess each other's work, which has greatly improved their own annotations. Students find it helpful and easy to use. This rubric assesses color-marking, annotating, and short answer responses. Each category is worth 5 points, so an overall score of 15 is possible. I use it on poetry annotations and close reading annotations.

I use this rubric in my A.P. Literature class; it can be used in any high-school English class, but because it emphasizes the use of a complex thesis statement, it's more appropriate for the upper grades (11th and 12th). Before assessing student essays using this rubric, I give them ample instruction in developing complex thesis statements, selecting effective quotes that don't summarize the plot, and integrating quotations into their analysis. Several of my other handouts go toward building e

Common Core Rubric for any Book report or project- Grade 6, 7, 8

This is a rubric I created that I use for every book project/ book report /literature circles culminating project that I give throughout the year. For example, I give a book review, a scrapbook project, a movie poster, and a menu of choices as my project. I fill in the specific type of project at the to
