Geologic Time Scale Model

In this activity, students will perform calculations to construct a timeline depicting major events from earth’s history. This timeline will allow students to visualize the sequence of these events on a scale that is comprehensible to them because they are modeled on objects that connect to their own experiences. Examples of images could include things like a meter stick, a calendar, a clock, or a football field.

This is a fun way for your students to learn about the different landforms! Each student/partner/group gets assigned a landform and they build a model based on that landform. Then you have your students set up their model along with their descriptions and extra paper for comments from other students around the room. Students then do a gallery walk, writing comments on other students extra paper about how their landforms are similar to or different from the landform they are observing!

Students made this after we completed the spheres of Earth in Environmental Science. The standard used for the unit addresses the interactions of the spheres, so to be sure the students understood what each sphere consisted of as well how all spheres worked together to sustain life as we know it, I came up with this as a fun little activity that could be rigorous or easily modified for students with accommodations. It can also be easily modified for younger grades. Just as with all my items, it

During the Earth Science Unit on Rocks and Minerals, it is important that students are able to connect content to the real world. This assignment is a social justice based assignment. The PowerPoint  project is usually done after the minerals unit and can be done alone or with an addition of an assigned research paper an/or oral presentation. Because we all use electronics, this assignment gets students to think about how our consumerism impacts the world.
