Caleb Wiles
This project introduces students to a real world problem using the pythagorean theorem. Students are asked to find the perimeter of their large yard and compare price quotes from two companies who have made a bid for the job. The work is relatively simple and is perfectly suited for Algebra I and Geometry students. It's a short project that could even be given for a homework assignment or in-class activity. The topics covered include the pythagorean theorem, perimeter, plotting points, and

Tessellation based patterns are fun, making a kind of math – art puzzle that your students design themselves. This project will walk your students through the process of designing and creating fabulous tessellated pattern artworks. All you need are pencils, rulers, scissors, transparent tape, and construction paper. Download has Teacher Instructions and two ready-to-print pages of handouts with complete explanatory diagrams. This was designed to be an easy, accessible introduction to Tessellati

This activity combines math and art to help students practice calculating volume. In this project, students build a three-dimensional "sculpture" out of any materials they choose. Then, they calculate the volume by measuring each part of their sculpture and using appropriate formulas. I have been amazed by the projects my 8th grade students have created for this assignment. The guidelines and rubric are included in the download. You will receive a PDF and an editable word document. I requi

Absolute Value
The Alphabet Slope Creative Project gives students an opportunity to practice using positive, negative, zero and undefined slopes in a creative context that is fun and personal. This project has two parts. First students practice labeling the lines that make up the letters of the alphabet, according to slope definitions. Once that is completed and checked by the teacher to ensure understanding, students will move on to the creative portion of the project. To complete the second portion of the p

In this project, students will use the Pythagorean Theorem to calculate the side lengths of successive triangles. They will also use right triangle Trigonometry (Soh Cah Toa) to calculate the measure of interior angles. This project gives them a chance to create using Math, and to decorate their spiral in whatever way they choose. I often use this project before exams, allowing them to compete for bonus points. The spirals are easy to grade, and fun for the kids.

This Geometry project is a fun and creative way for students to demonstrate their knowledge of SSS, SAS and AA Similarity. Students will construct triangles with a ruler, compass and a detailed set of instructions. This alternative assessment can be done in class as each concept is introduced or entirely at home. It is so much fun to see students creativity when they turn in their final project.

21st Century Math Projects by Topic Chart

I have experimented with different ways to make my 21st Century Math Projects more searchable and clear. Although a title like "Cost of Smoking" is descriptive of the interdisciplinary content, it isn't clear what topics are being taught. I have tried to make a Common Core alignment chart, but now with well over 100 projects that became too much to see visually. I have mapped each project to the CCSS on the TPT. A great project for all kids of any age to learn logic, reasoning, and mathematics! The whimsical Laura Numeroff story of If you Give a Mouse a Cookie gives a logical step by step of actions one after another. Project is best given after the story is read first. For younger ages: Have students write a story using hypothesis and conclusions. For students in Geometry: Have students compare it to geometry. Best given when learning conditional, converse, and bi-conditional. If you give a mouse a

Similarity refers to figures that are the same size and same shape. We can use proportions and similar figures to predict the height of objects in photographs. For this mini project, you are to take a digital picture of yourself standing next to a TALL object. (It is preferable that you take the picture next to something you can NOT measure the height of.) Then you will print your picture and use it to PREDICT how tall your object is. To do this, think about the properties we have used in c
