Alternative Performance Assignment

In all the years I have taught, there has never been a performance where everyone was present. Regardless of the reason, I give all students an alternative way to make up the points. Whereas it is impossible to recreate a performance, this assignment touches on other standards that we don't spend a ton of time on throughout the concert season and do require students to put in work they would have been doing while at a performance. This assignment has worked well for me for a number of reasons. I

I have a fairly large collection of scores of my favorite Band pieces that my Bands will never play. I use them to keep up score study chops, to figure out how I would teach potential problem spots, and to keep expanding my music brain.A student came in one day and asked me why I kept the pieces in my office. We had a great conversation which led me to creating this assignment. Students have enjoyed looking at pieces that are harder than what our Bands can handle and have learned some music t
