This PowerPoint explains how convection affects weather patterns and climate.Students must know that because warm air near Earth’s surface rises and then cools as it goes up, a convection current is set up in the atmosphere. There are three atmospheric convection areas in the northern hemisphere and three in the southern hemisphere: arctic region, temperate region and tropical region. Students will learn the wind belts located in that region: polar winds, trade winds and westerlies. Colorful gr

Awesome online simulation and videos for evolution. There didn't seem to be any questions available so I made my own. Hope this helps you and your class. It touches upon some basic evolution vocabulary such as natural selection, artificial selection, traits, heritability, mutations, speciation, etc. Designed for about a 60 minute period. Link to the simulation is here if you'd like to check it out: https://labs.minutelabs.io/evolution-simulator/

Density-Dependent Limiting Factor - Rate of Disease Spreading in a Population

Created by
Abby Lightle
Using simple chemicals (NaOH) and phenylthalene, students will participate in an activity that demonstrates the rate of disease spreading through 2 populations of different densities. The activity will help students realize that disease is a density-dependent factor rather than a density-independent factor. By the end students will realize that diseases spread more quickly the more dense the population is by simulating populations. They enjoy finding out who "died" at the end and who survived

Food Web Game

Looking for an effective method to teach students how to understand food webs as part of an ecosystem unit? It is definitely a challenging topic and I struggled to create motivating ideas for my students. As a special education teacher, I need to address all learning styles in my classroom. For my students, this kinesthetic approach really proved effective. What I have provided is a game that incorporates the scientific method. It can be adapted to any grade level, with any population. This is a template for a model that allows students to physically follow the process of transcription and translation. Learners first transcribe the DNA strand onto an mRNA strand via the RNA polymerase visual. Then learners translate the strand using the tRNA via the ribosome visual. Ultimately students sketch the amino acid sequence in their notebooks. For this activity I gave quick direct instruction on each process first. Then I showed a youtube clip of the transcription process, and had st

My 8th graders love this printable evolution game that we play as a class. They get to use their creativity to explore why certain organism survive and others do not. The game is played through rounds in which certain traits are good or not depending on the circumstances. Those who go extinct can come back as a modified version of a surviving student's organism. I have not yet had a class get bored with this activity and the ending round is always fun- what happens when humans come along. :)
