Food Web Game

Looking for an effective method to teach students how to understand food webs as part of an ecosystem unit? It is definitely a challenging topic and I struggled to create motivating ideas for my students. As a special education teacher, I need to address all learning styles in my classroom. For my students, this kinesthetic approach really proved effective. What I have provided is a game that incorporates the scientific method. It can be adapted to any grade level, with any population. This is a three day lesson plan that introduces the "experiment," or game, to the students, encourages them to make a hypothesis, develop a procedure, and then complete and reflect on the experiment. You may choose to complete the lesson without the scientific method, and can perform in one session. Through this experiment, the students will learn the role of producers, consumers (herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores), decomposers, and the sun as active participants of a food web.
