Global and Local Convection PowerPoint! ClimateRegions/Winds/Currents/Land&Sea

Created by

This PowerPoint explains how convection affects weather patterns and climate.Students must know that because warm air near Earth’s surface rises and then cools as it goes up, a convection current is set up in the atmosphere. There are three atmospheric convection areas in the northern hemisphere and three in the southern hemisphere: arctic region, temperate region and tropical region. Students will learn the wind belts located in that region: polar winds, trade winds and westerlies. Colorful gr

This activity proceeds as follows:1. Students brainstorm about why it is important to estimate the population of organisms2. Students learn how to estimate population using the “sampling” technique3. Students learn how to estimate population using the “mark and recapture” technique4. Students design a study to estimate a real population, and carry out their study.5. Extension Activity: Students read an article about the overfishing of Bluefin tuna, which is down to 4% of the population that it w

Stop Disasters! Game Simulation Worksheet

This worksheet works well with the Stop Disasters! simulation (http://www.stopdisastersgame.org/). This worksheet is currently written to have students prepare communities for tsunamis and earthquakes specifically through the simulation. However the simulation provides opportunities for students to also prepare for floods, wildfires, and hurricanes. This activity is a great way to wrap up a unit on natural disasters and mitigation. It could also be used to build interest when discussing natural

A simulation game to recreate the growth of a city. The game gives students a one minute timer to add a list of things to a blank map for every 10 year period of growth beginning in 1843 and ending in 2003. The simulation is meant to be frustrating and difficult so that students really get an idea of the many issues that can arise when a city develops quickly. The city used in this powerpoint is Portland, Oregon, but you could easily change the city to be the one in which you live or another cit

Ecosystem carrying capacity Deer Vs Coyote simulation (2 days)

The basis for this game is the O-Deer concept, however it is modified and simplified for my 6th grade science classes, and worked good in my 8th grade class as well. This is a 2 day activity and lab Day 1 Teacher reviews what is needed in an ecosystem and the rules of the game. Students do the activity, in 3 groups staged in 3 lines. They do this in a form of tag. Teacher records the population changes of the deer and coyotes over time. Data is recorded for 20 rounds but you can do more.

Students are assigned a starting population of frogs from one of 11 different ponds in the Central Florida area. They track the health of their population over a 10-year simulated timespan (10 rolls of the dice). Each time they roll, something happens to their frogs that year that impacts the population. Sometimes an alligator moves into their pond and starts eating frogs. Sometimes a hurricane hits increasing the size of their pond and the number of insects their frogs eat (resulting in a p

It is definitely a challenging topic and I struggled to create motivating ideas for my students. As a special education teacher, I need to address all learning styles in my classroom. For my students, this kinesthetic approach really proved effective. What I have provided is a game that incorporates the scientific method. It can be adapted to any grade level, with any population.
