Measuring Matter (mass, volume, and density)

Created by
Lori Stidham
This lesson is a fun way to help your students explore the mass, volume, and density of everyday objects. It teaches them all about measuring matter and then allows them to practice what they have learned through hands-on labs and word problem worksheets. It is primarily targeted for the 5-7 grade classroom. This lesson includes: 1. “Measuring Matter”PowerPoint with student handout 2. “Measuring Matter: Your Turn” (follows the ppt and lets students practice finding mass, volume, and density) 3

Geometry:Concurrent Points GeoGebra Activity - Circumcenter & Incenter -w/ Key

Tired of teaching the same boring lessons on Circumcenter and Incenter? After years of using the standard book resources, I decided to create this activity that demonstrates some real-life applications of these concurrent points. This product includes 9 tasks (with complete answer key and screen shots of graphics). Each task will ask students to find a real life circumcenter or incenter. (While this product did not include any centroid or orthocenter problems, I left those options on the top

Have your student explore which temperature of water will dissolve the candy corns first! They will be following the steps of the scientific method by predicting, observing, recording, drawing and concluding. This is a great activity to put in a center or even do as a demo or a whole class! Super EASY!

I believe unit conversions / stoichiometry / dimensional analysis is one of the most important skills to master. It is so useful in real life, whether traveling internationally, cooking, building, sewing, etc. After the 50th worksheet and word problem, I decided to make activities and stations for my students to practice unit conversions. Each station is set up for a different “real life” scenario that could involve unit conversion. You can modify the scenarios to fit the materials you have, but

This is a two for one activity set. Both of them involve taking distances in space and scaling them down to sizes observable on Earth. The first activity calculates sizes of the planets based on shrinking the Earth down to a 1cm diameter and then showing the spacing of the planets on a football field. The students will also calculate the mass distribution in the solar system between the planets and the sun. The second activity takes distances in the universe and scales them down to the Earth.

Olympic Proportions (Eight 7th Grade Math Stations)

This lesson connects 7th grade Common Core math standards in Ratio/Proportions and Geometry to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Students will work in groups of 3 to 5 and rotate about every 15 minutes to each station. Students will apply their knowledge of ratio, rate, unit rate, constant of proportionality, tables, graphs, writing equations, and computing actual lengths from a map using scale. Stations include interesting facts about the winter Olympics in Russia and/or require stu

This lab will get your students up and moving! And guess what? It's a MATH lab. That's right --I'm combining exercise and math over here :-) The target level for this lab is algebra 1 (typically 8th or 9th graders), but some advanced pre-algebra students will be able to handle it as well. Students should have a very basic understanding of systems of linear equations and percent error calculations before jumping into this activity. The hands-on portion of this lab is written to be conducted o

Engineering: Weights and Measures Conversion Tables

A weights and measures conversion table is useful when converting and calculating engineering, construction and STEM problem solving projects and activities. It helps students learn how to locate information and convert that information into their calculations. The conversion table also allows teachers to increase the rigor in their activities and problem solving projects by supplying students access to the needed information to accurately calculate a complex problem.

Students are to be provided a bag of skittles. They are going to use proportions and ratios to determine if there are the same number/ratio of each color in all different sized bags. I had students work in groups of 2 for this activity. Within the activity I broke it up into three different sections; a pre-lab, lab, and post-lab portion. Students make initial guesses/hypothesis, test out their theory, use proportions and ratios to analyze their results and graph data.
