Gravity Lab: Calculating Distance in Space

Created by
Mark Brown
In this lab, students start by measuring how far they can jump on Earth, and then calculate how far they could jump on the different planets and Earth's moon, based on the amount of gravity present on each body. This was a great way to demonstrate the effects of gravity, while also reinforcing the 6th grade math concept of division of decimals. All steps of the scientific method are included, along with a full rubric to assess students' learning. **Find the Dual Language Spanish version here:

Math Lab: Terminating and Repeating Decimals/DISTANCE LEARNING/NO PREP

This is a GREAT lab for students to discover the value of patterns in our wonderful world of mathematics! * In the lesson, students DO discover a relationship between fractions and decimals beginning with NINETEEN FRACTIONS THAT STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO DIVIDE THE NUMERATOR BY THE DENOMINATOR ON EACH.* Students learn the meaning of the terms "terminating" and "repeating" relative to decimals.* Students learn how and when it is appropriate to use the bar above repeating decimals. *

Composition of the Atmosphere Lab

In this Earth Science activity, students will gain a better understanding of what gases the atmosphere is made out of. Students will need to work some math problems out, converting percents and decimal places to determine ppm, parts per million. Students will gain an understanding that greenhouse gases make up such a small amount of the atmosphere, but are extremely important in keeping the temperature balance in check.Students will demonstrate the amounts that each gas makes up in the atmosph

Temperature & Matter Lab- Is Gas Really Matter? With Extension

✨Have you ever felt like your students "grasp" solids, liquids, and gases are matter- they take up space and have mass? But then, you realize they say things like "I can move through gas- like it's not here! It doesn't take up space" once you start getting into deeper discussions about it? That's what this lesson was designed for- to show that gas DOES take up space (inside a balloon) and prove that gas DOES have mass using scientific and mathematical evidence! ✨ I also felt like students were t

Science Calculating Gravity Lab Activity Science Graving Calculation Gravity Lab

Easy to incorporate, all you need is a scale! With this lab students weigh four different objects and calculate their weight on the different planets. The formula for calculating weight (mass x gravity = weight) is clearly stated in the directions. Students could use a calculator, or this activity can be a great interdisciplinary/cross-curricular math activity for practicing multiplying decimals!

The Layering Tower of Density

This a great lab for 5th, 6th, or even 7th grade to perform. The lab uses different liquids and allows students to see how different substance have different densities. The lab begins by discussing the density of water and then predicting if other liquids will be less/more dense. The practice problems review the density formula, allows them to slowly develop a formal lab report, and practice density problems on their own. Also, it allows students review subtracting decimals and answer quest

Density Lab

Introduction to Density for Middle School or High School students. Density formula and teacher-led example included. Simple Calculations that can be done with a calculator or by hand using Long division. Students should already know how to use a balance and how to read a graduated cylinder correctly (reminder to read at the bottom of the meniscus). After introducing the students to density, I showed the first page on my Smart board and we worked through the dinosaur and sea sponge density pro

What is a Year? (Inner Planet Revolutions)

Scientific Method inquiry about the solar system/space Students will show the distances of the inner planets from the sun compared to each other. Students will show the revolution of each planet using yarn then hang all 4 pieces next to each other to see the difference in their length. Students will come to the conclusion that planets further away from the sun have longer years because of the distance needed to travel in one revolution. The end product will be a visual of the inner planets' orb
