Students will forget their instruments at home, whether we like it or not. It is important to keep the students engaged in the music making process, even though they do not have an instrument. As you will see, the questions and spaces for responses is acceptable to the duration of the rehearsal, as well as the points needed to retain for rehearsals. MB

Band Practice Task Clip Chart for mouth and hands

As a beginning band teacher, I am constantly trying to avoid students learning by rote when we are learning new exercises or reviewing rhythm concepts with method book exercises. The clip chart is similar in construction to a behavior clip chart. Instead of pointing out unwanted behavior, it states what learning activities we are doing to learn a song quickly. In my classroom, we usually only play an exercise with a new music concept after we've done one of the following:Say the counts (mouth) an

Musical Instrument Practice Log for Family

I created this simple table to keep all members of my home accountable for their music lesson practice. Family members briefly state their goal for the week and/or how often they hope to practice. I found it motivated us to continue to practice. You could use this as an award base or simply as a visual cue.

To be used in conjunction with ClassDojo or other 'point' based motivation and behaviour management. As students show desired/favourable behaviours and/or work hard, finish work or help others they are given a 'Music Buck'. At the end of the lesson students can trade in Music Bucks for points on ClassDojo or for rewards or prizes depending on class behavioural management system. This was designed for a music classroom.
