The Pumpkin: Fall Literacy Song and Activity

The pumpkin is a rhyme set to the tune of London Bridge. It tells a story of growing a pumpkin from seed to harvest. For primary classrooms, it can be used to teach/reinforce sight words, rhyming words, consonants and vowels, or just to have fun singing a seasonal song. After the students are familiar with the song, use it in a literacy center. Laminate the pages and provide erasable markers and have students highlight specific things that reinforce literacy concepts you are teaching. Also a

Nature of Science Vocabulary Chants

Chants are an exciting and effective teaching strategy. This Nature of Science pack contains five chants about topics such as the scientific method and safety. Why chants? The Water Cycle Song

In order to help my kindergarten students remember the components of the water cycle, I have made up a song which identifies the four stages of the cycle - precipitation, accumulation, evaporation and condensation. This is sung to the familiar tune of "The Wheels On the Bus". I write this up on a large chart when teaching it to the children. I then provide each child with his or her own copy for their poetry folder. They also add their own illustration.

I hope you will enjoy this as much as my students have. I compiled a list of songs popular during the time I was growing up in the 1960's and 1970's. Students analyze the lyrics to answer Common Core-friendly comprehension questions. Afterwards, they listen and watch 1-2 videos of the song. For most songs, there is one video with just lyrics and one with the actual artist performing. The links to all the songs are at the end of the file. If you come across a link that is broken, please let me k

Katie's Happy Corner presents The Important Little Cloud. It is intended to help young children understand the water cycle. Conversation among the "little drops" clarifies terms such as "evaporate" and "invisible" as they float higher until they "condense" and become a cloud. Little Cloud soon connects with other clouds that are going to "precipitate" - they explain to Little Cloud that the word means they're going to "rain." Little Cloud is afraid that if he rains, he'll disappear forever, b

It is essentially a "Close" worksheet designed to help you track students' absorption of content, keep students on task, and help them retain the information included in the article. I have added the article in a printable form with only one edit to make it student-appropriate (changed a reference to alcohol to be about chocolate). Article posted at http://ideas.ti
