A song a day
Motivate the most unmotivated students. Use a song a day for reading and reflecting as a starter or "Do Now" for any Language Arts, Civics, ESL, or music class. Worksheets are easy to understand. All students have to do is try. There really isn't any wrong answer except for not trying. The only disability in life is a poor attitude. You can't say you don't know something if haven't even tried.

I Can Change the World: using popular music to discuss social justice

Music and social justice have always had close ties. Music has been used for centuries to pass on important life lessons and to motivate change.  Many artists have recorded songs that seek to empower the listener to make social change. In addition, pop culture can help youth to discuss important social issues with peers; talking about social issues with peers can be daunting, particularly if the youth lives and goes to school in an atmosphere in which they know that their viewpoint is not necess

Print out three pages of preview to get copy of lyrics, and a written activity with key. There is an AWFUL, but memorably AWFUL recording to go along with the PPT.

Comedian Red Skelton once explained The Pledge of Allegiance to his audience. The studio’s orchestra provided a slow, quiet background to his words. A recitation of Mr. Skelton’s words is to be presented while the school band plays the (elementary to young middle school) musical backdrop at a slow tempo, around 90 beats per minute.

In December we started teaching the process by which a bill becomes a law at the national level. Because it was close to the holidays I thought it would put the process to music. I ended up with "Joy to the World! A Bill has Come!" It was fun to watch the students take the test and hear them humming the song so they would get the answer correct. They can even change a few words around and have it work for the state lawmaking process as well.
