Surface Area Project: Rectangular Solids and Cylinders

Created by

Students will bring in a box (and cylinder) from home and use it to find surface area (using 2 different methods), volume and to create a net. Students will also review measurement and use appropriate units (squared and cubed). This project will enable the students to actually understand the surface area formula. (instead of just plugging numbers into a formula) They will not only use the formula, but also calculate the area of each of the individual 6 faces of a rectangular solid (and parts o

Fraction Recipe Book Project

This is an activity I used to reinforce fraction operations in my 6th grade math class. The students created a class recipe book by each bringing in three of their favorite recipes. They had to include a list of ingredients, as well as instructions for doubling, tripling, or halving the recipe. They had a lot of fun designing their book covers and pages, adding in cooking tips and kitchen advice, and assembling the class book. They each received a copy to take home- and many of them brought

This is a good project to bring in real life models to review geometry as well as measurement for perimeter and area. I use this closer to the end of the year and give students multiple weeks to finish assignment. You can also modify this by changing some of the requirements for special education students as well as add more challenging skills required for those higher students.

Design Your Dream House Math Project: Area, Perimeter, Angles, Scale Factor, Etc

I taught an Occupational Course of Study class this year and developed this project for them to learn and/or review area and perimeter while also introducing them to scale factors, angles, geometric design, and even the skills necessary to create a sales document on the computer. Please see the preview to see all that's included in the project.Even though I designed this to be a hands-on project for high school kids on a third to fifth grade level, this could easily be incorporated for middle o

Customary and Metric Measurement Olympics!

This is an activity that has students estimate and measure using both customary and metric measurement of weight and length. Teachers may use objects of their choosing for the events, such as a paper plate and heavy plastic plate for the discus event, a cotton ball and softball for the shotput event, and two various sized balls for the laying long roll. Students will have a blast participating in the three kinesthetic events! Students also collect score data by analyzing classmate's scores and p

For this project students are tasked with creating a scale city. They will create a 2-D blueprint of their city, as well as, a 3-D model. With my class I had them create the 2-D model on grid line chart paper. Students also must write a paragraph (or two) describing the amenities of the city and a billboard advertisement to attract people to their town. Students will present their designs to the class (planning committee). The group with the highest average grade is considered to have won the bi

Create an Arcade Game Project - Applying Geometry and Measurement

This is a highly engaging and creative project, inspired by the concept of "Caine's Arcade" (on youtube), that allows your students to show what they know about geometry and measurement. Students will build an original arcade game that includes shapes with specific measurements (such as a certain perimeter, area, circumference, etc...). Then, they get to invite students from other classrooms in your school to come and play their games. I always throw in an extra credit incentive for my top "arc
