Students are required to be able to connect a series of historical events through the common core curriculum. Using a timeline is a highly effective way to help students organize this information. Many grade levels teach the significant events of the Civil Rights movement and the importance of leader Martin Luther King Jr. This lesson plan combines a variety of writing, reading, and social studies standards.

Music was an important part of the Civil RIghts Movement.Having students analyze song lyrics can increase interest and participation while connecting them to culture. The corresponding questions relate to course content like symbolism, theme, figurative language, direct text evidence, allusion, and the Civil Rights Movement. The formatting may look a little wonky on a Word Document.I recommend putting this on a GoogleDoc and setting it to "pageless."

This download provides links to a Prezi and a Google Slides presentation (downloadable as a Powerpoint) of Jim Crow photos. These photos were available on websites, so I am not charging, but I did put them together to use as a presentation. I also added some segregation photos from my own life as a resident of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, which is one of the most segregated cities in America. If you're teaching To Kill a Mockingbird, you've probably gone to Jim Crow websites, so this is nothing new.

Directions used for a Civil Rights ELA unit. Students struggled to understand the order and time difference between events. As a warm-up, I had them try to put a few events in order on their own then as a class we put the events in order. I gave students legal size paper and walked them through setting up their timeline (folding the paper in half, drawing a line, labeling with years). Then I handed out the attached document and let students work together to create their timelines.

For MLK Day this year, I created a poster paper for students to write their dreams. I included a thought bubble and then I uploaded their school picture into the word document to make it look they were telling their dreams. I then posted them on our "I Have a Dream Wall" in our gymnasium. It's a great way to get everyone in your school involved in MLK Day.
