This is a project that is great for the intermediate grades! Students select a book to enter into a class March Madness: Battle of the Books Tournament. They will create a persuasive poster and write a persuasive essay encouraging their classmates to vote for their book.

This assignment is designed for students to review important concepts from the first quarter, semester, unit, or even a previous year. The assignment is written for one semester of an English class, but it can easily be tailored to fit any upper elementary, middle, or high school class of any subject.

STAAR Surgeons
This is a great way to start working on STAAR passages with your students after the holidays. It is a very bright idea a coworker shared with me about four years ago to start implementing STAAR simulations in the classroom. I modified it a bit and gave it a name as well designed the thinking tracks that go along with it. It is a extremely engaging way to apply all knowledge previously taught in the classroom. I have made it easier to use Language Art strategies using nonfiction text! Using this activity, you can dissect articles in both Time Magazine for kids and Scholastic magazine. Using mini graphic organizers, construction paper, scissors, glue & pencils- students will dissect each article & identify text features. These are also great as centers & in small groups!
