When I take my students into the conservatory or an outdoor garden I hope to prepare them with this lesson. It's a good way to focus them as to where to start. It describes thumbnail sketching so that they can begin to work on composition immediately. The idea of detail is revealed this way also. As they return to the classroom, they can then have a better idea of what it is they wish to work out on their watercolor paper.

This simple sheet has three circles. You color in 1 being the best to 3 being scribbly mess. You can use multiple of these sheets to demonstrate best practices of coloring with crayons, markers, color pencils, oil pastels, chalk, etc. The kids really enjoy this hanging in the room. I revert back to it constantly. "Your coloring is at a 2, almost at a 1.. keep going!!" There is room in the circles to color.
