This is an easy-to-implement project that I have used in my U.S. Government courses in the past, although it could be adapted for use in U.S. history or even an applied math course. The learning focus is to get students to make the connections from values to numbers and recognize that differing political perspectives can be seen in how the federal budget takes shape.

Traditional mathematics instruction, which usually has its emphasis on a single, correct product, is now being revised to include the “process” of problem solving. Teachers must emphasize in their instructions that there can be more than one right answer and/or one strategy used to solving the problem. Communicating these strategies, both orally and in writing, expands the students’ ability to see how a solution is derived, if it is logical and reasonable, and how this solution can be applied to

Math Task Rubric

This rubric is useful for grading math tasks completed in support of Common Core and the PARCC assessment. I left the document in a .doc file so that you can edit the wording for your grade level (this is the wording I used for 5th grade). This document is 4 pages long...each page is the exact same rubric. Print one page normal size and slip into a sheet protector for students to self-assess with a dry erase marker. Print 4 to a page and cut apart to grade students and attach to their work.

Mathematics Research Project

This is a great end of year research project for any math course at a multitude of grade levels! From start to end of presentations, this project took me two weeks to complete - I give specific dates for each goal and give a grade for completion of each goal. The points I gave are listed on the information sheet. I created this in Word and it can be edited to fit your classroom and your needs. Students are asked to research a famous mathematician, write a research paper and give a presentation.
