Visual Strategies to Increase Ability to be Understood
This is a visual to use with mid-elementary and upper students. It provides a visual way of showing strategies that a student can use when they have spoken, but are not understood by their communication partner. These strategies can be independently used by students and can help to reduce frustration and unexpected behaviors due to intelligibility (with speech sound errors, grammar, or language/word choice).

Having happily taught The Outsiders for about 18 years, I've transferred many scenes from the story into scripts for students to read in class and sometimes more formally present. The scenes are arranged from the parts of the chapter with lots of dialogue, but the narration is true to the text. Attached is the novel Passing by Nella Larsen. I have turned the novel into a "play" in the style of "Reader's Theater," since my kids respond well to things being read out loud!
