Text Structures Rap (Iggy Azalea Parody)
Many of my students were struggling with learning and recognizing the differences between the six nonfiction text structures. So, I rewrote Iggy Azalea's "Fancy" to include information about cause and effect, question and answer, description, problem and solution, compare and contrast, and chronological order/sequence. Enjoy!
Also, I changed "I.G.G.Y." to M.U.L.E because our school mascot is the mule. You could change that part to any four letter word or team you'd like.

Literary Devices in Song Lyrics
Distribute assignment to students as it has a glossary of literary terms and their definition on it.
Upon playing two songs for the class (Monster by Eminem and Gone, Gone, Gone by Phillips Phillips) ask students to search the lyrics for literary devices, using the glossary on their assignment. As a class, discuss the devices that were found. Many lyrics can apply to multiple devices!
Afterwards, ask students to complete the assignment. The assignment instructs students to find three songs of

Inferring Using Music
Help students practice the skill of inferring in a more engaging way using music. The song lyrics "Hazard" by Richard Marx leave lots of room for making inferences about the characters involved in the song. After teaching what an inference is, use these questions (along with song lyrics) to have students make inferences about what is happening in the song. Video can be used too, but there is a scene in the video that teachers may or may not feel comfortable using.

Word identification is an important part of learning to read. This song teaches children the three things you can do when you don't know a word: sound it out, look for small parts, and look around for clues.
