Modeling with Sinudoidal Functions - Foxes and Rabbits

Created by
Morrison Math
Sinusoidal functions are a staple of Algebra 2 and Pre-Calculus but the modeling problems in the textbooks are always so dry. I can't stand any more weights on a spring or riders on a ferris wheel! I wanted to make a problem that would be more interesting than the classic textbook tropes and I also wanted students to experience data that could be modeled this way. Of course, data is never perfect so the data provided here can be modeled with sine or cosine but no model will completely exact.

This was a PBL I created to help students I worked with during a summer school program in Montana. Unfortunately, we never got to work through it, but I thought it was worth putting up here anyway. The demographic I was helping were students with high access to social media and crowdfunding platforms, but a low comprehension of fundraising and donation etiquette that led to many misconceptions about requesting funds for a project. This is meant to be a crash-course in budgeting, which can be use

Overview of Mr. Bill's Store

I learned many years ago that the most effective way of keeping math engaging for students is through SELECTIVE PROBLEM SOLVING. All kinds of problem solving...not just traditional "solve this equation" problems. I will offer teachers ideas for keeping kids excited about math. Such as...building a probability distribution of outcomes from throwing dice...constructing a pendulum that will draw Lissajous figures...constructing a Foucault pendulum...how to do interesting large-scale astronomical
