Study Guide for "Sing A Song" by Kelly Starling Lyons
The book, Sing A Song written by Kelly Starling Lyons and illustrated by Keith Mallett, is a visually beautiful introduction to the Negro National Anthem. Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing by James Weldon Johnson is the iconic song performed by school children and church choirs all over America. This study guide will serve as a guide for studying the lyrics and connecting the song to African American history through the eyes of a young child. The child grows up and readers follow the passage of time.

Students will get to read and annotate the song lyrics while identifying figurative language terms. The figurative language terms are identified using SHAMPOO+II's. Theme CD Project
This project is a quick and fun way to make sure students understand the basic concept of theme. The students will be asked to create a CD and CD Case out of paper. They will come up with tens songs that have the same theme and write them on the case. The students will then fill in a disc template on which they will define the word "theme". While this assignment seems very simple, students will still have fun linking about their favorite music and tying the music to the concept at hand. The
