My 50-year journey as a professional educator has taken me from owning and operating a daycare center, teaching elementary and high school, serving as a special education teacher, developing and directing a charter school, serving as a literacy coach to college level instruction. Serving as an educator in South Carolina, New York, Georgia and the Caribbean, I've learned basic truths and practices to enhance the quality of life for children and families.
Personalized learning due to my years of experience as a teacher of special needs students result in superior academic achievement. Movement and relating learning to the real life experiences of students will keep them engaged.
Selected as Teacher of the Year of several schools, honored by the State House of Representatives in South Carolina for community organizing and development, featured in Woman's Day magazine, Essence and The Wall Street Journal
Matriculating at the following universities: Adelphi University, Garden City, New York; Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY; University of South Carolina and South Carolina State University, I earned a BS in Elementary Education, Special Education and a MS in Administration. I am certified in the state of South Carolina as an elementary administrator, teacher, special education teacher and literacy coach. Serving as an extension agent for Clemson University, I organized community-based youth groups and assisted local citizens in identifying and addressing community needs. I created a national youth development model that was replicated nationally in 15 states with an enrollment of 5,000+ youth. This program was funded by the international nonprofit Save the Children.
As the parent of two toddlers in the 80's, I developed a daycare program based in Savannah, GA that was one of the first integrated centers and the first to teach toddlers literacy and numeracy skills preparing them for success in elementary school. Always concerned with improving the community wherever I lived and worked, I've created several nonprofit programs focused on leadership development for youth and adults. Currently, as the parent of 4 adult children with several grandchildren, I understand the value of intentional parenting.
