I have created a compilation of lyrics from the classic songs from "Schoolhouse Rocks America" videos. Mnemonic learning has proven to not only help retention of information but also provide a fun learning activity for both students and teachers. The Schoolhouse Rock videos have given almost 50 years of unforgettable songs and cartoons that stay with the audience for decades longer than most lessons provided in classrooms today. As a student, I utilized them repeatedly in school to remember gram

Teaching kids about the government and how it works is often a dreary task...no MORE! In this highly engaging visual hands-on presentation kids build critical thinking skills and work at making their own meaning by using the See. Think, and Wonder routine developed by Harvard's Project Zero. A full description of the routine and my teacher tips for using it with intention is included in the slide notes. Engaging graphics ask kids to think deeply about government, it's purpose, and how people

Students often have difficulty understanding the concept of time. By using a timeline that is part of the classroom decor, they will be able to readily see when significant events occurred. The theme of the timeline is the terms of U.S. presidents. After the timeline is posted, students can research various areas (inventions, local events, etc.) and place them on the timeline. In this way, they can have a better idea of historical milestones.

This serves as a sample for what a social studies syllabus could look like. This is specific to my 11th grade US History class, but it could easily be adapted to fit any 7-12 social studies class.

1776 - Most clips are from the movie, but not all clips are available so some are from the closest version of the play. I watched this movie for the first time when I was in 5th grade. Years later, when I first tried to show it to my class I made the mistake of not re-reviewing the movie. I had forgotten that my own teacher had fast forwarded the VCR through the long parts. Warning: If you are at a conservative location, there are lines like “Damn,” and “Hell.” You may want to consider h

These is a series of questions to go along with the film " Gideon's Trumpet". This film is a dramatization of the Gideon v. Wainwright SCOTUS case. The film provides a visual element to the case to assist in student understanding.
