Integers and Order of Operations

This worksheet has build-in differentiation because there are 6 "phases", each one more difficult than the last. It starts with basic integer rules with simple problems that test students' understanding of the rules. Then it moves on to problems that incorporate order of operations, which I find REALLY FORCES the kids to IDENTIFY the operation, and apply the correct rule. The phase 6 problem is very challenging. The students loved trying to get through each phase into harder and harder problems.

I have used this scenario with success for many years when introducing the Distributive Property to students. I present this prompt to students and ask them to explain their thinking regarding this "outfits" scenario. Inevitably, someone shares that they thought of the price for each "outfit": 3(20 + 25) And another student shares that they separated "shirts" from "jeans": 3 • 20 + 3 • 25 A great way to show students they already understand the concept of the Distributive Property!
