Grade 6-8 Music - Music Genres: History Research Assignment
In this activity students work individually or with a partner to research a genre or sub-genre of music. Using the guiding questions provided in the research organizer, students create a visual (poster, brochure, etc) and an oral presentation teaching the class about their genre. As part of the American Dream unit, teachers at my school had students write about family history. I saw a problem after my first year, however, since some students either didn't know family history. Many of the stories taught throughout history of the "First Thanksgiving" have been greatly exaggerated. In this assignment, students are given a list of statements that are either fact or fiction. The student must research using tablet, laptop or other resources and write whether the statements are true or not. The student must support the statement with evidence they have found to support if it is true or if it is indeed a myth. A perfect assignment for the week of Thanksgiving and after!

Poetry in Pop Music
Even though it might be depressing for English teachers, the fact is that poetry has pretty much been replaced by popular songs. Are these songs poems? Allow your students to argue in favor of their favorite artists and learn about poetic devices in the process.
Students who dislike everything about English class will enjoy this assignment. Know ahead of time what you will do about naughty lyrics, especially if you have students present to the class.

Students will use the directions above to either research a Native American tribe or use the information provided to them in class to create a Native American Scene on poster board. They will then add captions to their scene and either record the presentation to be presented to the class or present the information in the form of a speech.

Turkey Challenge
A great activity to use right before the Thanksgiving holiday. There are 20 questions about turkeys for the students to answer. My students use the Ipads to find the answers. This can be used for extra credit, individually or with partners. This is a great way for them to practice looking for information right before the holiday break.
To extend this you could have the students take some of the information and create informational paragraphs about turkeys if you really wanted to extend this
