How to find the volume of a solid using the liquid displacement method
This is a short, animated, PowerPoint slide show, demonstrating the method used to find the volume of an irregular solid (a swimmer doll) using liquid displacement. The original volume of water in the graduated cylinder is measured, the swimmer races over to the graduated cylinder and jumps into the water, the water level rises, and the new volume of the water is measured. Within a real world context (a city manager trying to plan shorter roads) students will produce diagrams of right triangles with rulers and find the relationship between the sides of the triangles.
By the end of the lesson, students should see that the sum of the squares of the legs is equal to the square of the hypotenuse. Further, they should be able to produce the Pythagorean Theorem through class discussion.
