2024 March Mathness Madness NCAA Basketball Probability and Statistics Lesson

Created by

Every year I get my students excited about the NCAA Men's Basketball March Madness Tournament. I see articles written year after year from statisticians, sports journalist, celebrities, etc. about predicting the perfect bracket. Regardless that most have accepted it is nearly impossible, it has not deterred these enthusiast from finding an algorithm or a machine that can predict the outcomes. This packet guides students through 1) An explanation of what March Madness is all about2) A reading abou

Chance and Probability activity using yummy Skittles!!! Students are to predict the colours and quantities before they open the skittles bag. Students are to complete a chance experiment where they use a tally to collect their data. Students then transfer their data in fractions, decimals and percentages. Students are to create a bar graph using their data as well as answer chance and probability questions about the data. I used this with my grade 5/6 students and they loved it!

Candy Probability: Discovery of EXPERIMENTAL vs. THEORETICAL Probability

Middle Schoolers LOVE probability! This is a GREAT lesson around Halloween when the kids are already hyped up on sugar and want to 'talk' to their classmates. This activity allows the students to DISCOVER the differences between EXPERIMENTAL and THEORETICAL probability and connect it to everyday experiences. The probability lesson lends itself to fractions, decimals, percents, data collection, rational & irrational numbers, statistical graphs (box and whiskers, frequency tables...), measu

Home Prices: High School Statistics Project

This statistics project has students exploring home prices and using their knowledge of mean, median, standard deviation, histograms, box and whisker plots, and bell curves to make predictions and inferences about the data. This project is provided in a word document to allow the teacher the ability to edit the document or load it to a google doc. In this project students first make predictions about measures of spread and central tendency without calculating but by looking at the data. Students

Probability of Compound Events (Guided Notes)

Created by
Eddie McCarthy
This lesson is meant to be used as guided notes for a whole class. Students begin by learning what makes 2 events independent. After slowly working through a problem about rolling a die and choosing a card, they discover that they can multiply probabilities when working with these compound events. They then attempt problems involving picking marbles from a bag. Next, they learn about dependent events, and finally, mutually exclusive events. The last 2 pages are a copy of the key.

Sampling Methods Matching Activity

18 cards included. Students match six types of sampling methods (random, cluster, stratified, convenience, systematic, and self-selected) with their definitions and an example of each type. Teacher answer key included for easy assessment. When students are finished, they should have 6 groups of 3 cards each for teacher/other group to check.

Statistics In My World Project

This is a great project for students to do at the beginning of a HS statistics class. It will open their eyes to statistics in the media and provides real world interpretation of material learned the first couple weeks of class. The best part - You get lots of decorations for your wall and material to use as you progress through descriptive statistics! Package includes instructions for teacher, including CCSM standards and objectives; student handout outlining specifics of the project; gradi

Conditional Probability and Tree Diagrams Geometry Spring 2013 w/ Key (Editable)

Once I've covered basic probability and statistical measures, I like to have students work with conditional probability, which can often go hand-in-hand with tree diagrams. I created this worksheet for my Geometry students, and I find that it is challenging for them, but it can be broken down into "baby steps" and they learn to navigate their way around a tree diagram to calculate conditional probabilities. I use this activity within cooperative groups, and I circulate to make sure they are ge

Would you rather be rich and fat or poor and skinny? Would you rather have a light saber or helper monkey? Do boys and girls respond differently to such questions? Students will survey classmates and then analyze the results using two way tables. Addresses Common Core Math Standard 8.SP.A.4.

This document contains a statistics project description that allows students to create their own project. This is suitable for high school and beginning level college statistics class. Students will design their own study - formulate research questions, collect data, organize and summarize the findings, calculate confidence interval and construct hypothesis testing. Certain restrictions are outlined in the document. Students will experience the complexity of constructing their own study. They ar

This lab asks students to apply concepts of 1-sample t-test of means in a real world context. They are able to play/simulate games and determine if their theoretical calculation is accurate. This lab integrates hypothesis testing based on two carnival games. Spiraling expected value and random variable topics from previous chapters will help themto prepare them with a "big picture" when it comes to the AP Statistics Exam. (For the high flyers: It also asks students to develop of higher orde

These are guided notes for a lesson on measures of central tendency including mean, median, mode, and range. There are several examples in the notes and the same data sets are used to show each measure of central tendency.I have also included a teacher key to show you what to fill in the blanks as your students follow along. To use these notes, I simply projected them onto my whiteboard, gave the students their blank copies, and had them follow along and write what I wrote. This works great when

Carnival Probability Project

A project that feels like a game! Students must create their own game, using probability to ensure THEY are favored to win....much like the house in a casino. Students can make games involving dice, spinners, cards, "fishing" ducks out of a pond, etc. Assessed skills include: fundamental counting principal, theoretical probability, experimental probability, independent events, dependent events, creativity, writing, presentation. *Students must already know basic probability to complete this

After teaching my students about scatterplots, correlation, and the line of best fit, I take a day for them to do a hands-on lab, in which they measure their height (in inches) and their forearm length (from the tip of their elbow, to the bony point on their wrist), and we plot the class data, write the equation of the line of best fit, and then use the equation generated both forwards and backwards. They will need 45 minutes to an hour to do this in class. I have found that if the students br

I created this packet on tree diagrams for my probability unit so that students could work with one another to learn how to create a tree diagram on their own without my direct instruction. This gave me the freedom to help students that needed more individualized instruction and guidance. This packet was great to use before introducing the fundamental counting principle.

Normal Distributions - Activity Series

This activity sheet helps students better understand normal distributions through the use of dice. Each student rolls a pair of dice and adds the total of each dice and records it 100 times. Then they plot the distribution and in most cases it comes out a bell curve. Its a fun and easy way to show the distribution. You could pair students up for less dice usage.
