Harlem Renaissance Work Stations
I like to begin this unit with clips from the Cotton Club and short documentaries on the Harlem Renaissance Movement. Playing music from this era really establishes the mood of this period.
There are 8 work stations, each takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. I put students into groups of 4-5. I explain how to do each work station before they begin. The students sit with their groups and I give each group one of the folders. While they work, I circulate around the room to assist.

Creating a Brochure for New Immigrants - The American Dream
This is a great study to help student think about America as a society, and the idea of the American dream. Students work independently or in groups to put together a brochure or website to guide new immigrants through a certain aspect of American society: justice, religion, poverty, education, military, etc.
This project works very well with Animal Farm, Of Mice and Men, and The Great Gatsby.

This is an assignment I use for my ESL students. It is a poem that we read at first, and in the second handout, they put their own experiences into the poem, essentially, making it their own. They draw visuals and images that represent their poem when it is completed and take ownership of it.

A Christmas Carol Stave III for ESL/ELL Students
I use this as an easier version of A Christmas Carol with my beginner ESOL students. The text is difficult but with the correct scaffolding the students really get involved with the story. They feel proud that they can read such a difficult book. This is STAVE 3 only.

9/11 Mood, Tone, & Free Verse Activity
This activity is meant to give students an idea of what happened on 9/11. Students will read a poem, listen to two songs, and watch a video on SchoolTube (all links are provided).
