“The Raven” by Edgar Allen Poe: Setting and Tone

This is a nice “take a break from non-stop writing” sort of lesson plan, and it appeals to those future Van Gogh’s and Picassos in your classroom, as well. Using Poe’s delightfully melancholy and bizarre poem, “The Raven,” students discuss first how setting creates tone which then creates mood for the reader. It is a literary domino effect, so to speak! Reading with purpose, underline examples of descriptive words describing setting and creating tone and then students are assigned a creative

This is a fun small group activity that can be used in grades 8 through 12. This is an assignment that requires deep thinking and that the students actually enjoy. I usually introduce this activity in October to set the Halloween theme. Divide the class up into small groups of a minimum of 2 students but no more than 4 students. Give each group one of more verses of Edgar Alan Poe’s poem The Raven. Have the students totally and thoroughly translate the verse(s) into today’s modern language.

This is a great hands on activity to practice not only learning to identify figurative language but also to analyze why the author used it. Students will cut out the song lyric tiles and analyze each tile and determine if it fits under the Simile category, the Metaphor category, or the Personification category. They will place each tile under its correct category and on a sepa

Poetry Scavenger Hunt - Editable!

This is a fun activity I use to go over after studying poetry. Before starting, I will have several (I did 12) poems printed out and taped to the wall in my classroom. Then I give the students the scavenger hunt sheet (going over some of the terms we've previously discussed, if necessary), and let them go. It's engaging, facilitates group discussion, and requires analysis in order to complete successfully.

My eighth-grade students LOVED this lesson, and so did I! Whether your students are already "Poe pros" or they are just learning about the man and his works, they will get SO MUCH out of this exercise--NOT just about Poe, but also about how life affects texts. A series of six stations is ready to go. Students rotate with a piece of paper, a pen, a clipboard, and a small group of fellow students. Each station has complete (and quick--5 minutes tops per station) directions prompting students to

This Reader's Theater is for four students. This is the ballad of Casey at the Bat and was written by Ernest Lawrence Thayer in 1888. I have not changed the words. I spaced it for the students and broke it into parts. The words that rhyme are in bold to help the students know which words to emphasize. The reason I chose this ballad for reader's theater is that it sounds wonderful when read aloud. Students will need practice getting in the sing song voice of it while also using emotion. Due to th

Find Poetry resources | TPT

Learn more about poetry resources

Poetry encourages students to engage with language, explore their thoughts and feelings, and connect with the broader human experience. If you’re a teacher or parent looking for printable and digital poetry resources, look no further. TPT has an extensive collection of resources, created by other teachers, that are designed to help with any need across grade levels.

If you want to make poets out of younger students in elementary grades, then acrostic poems or fill in the blank poems are the perfect place to start. (In fact, many poetry resources on TPT include templates so your students can easily get started producing their own poetry, whether it’s a haiku, or limerick.) For older students in middle and high school, you can find an array of resources to teach them about everything from iambic pentameter, figurative language, to famous poets from history. With plenty of TPT resources at your fingertips, you can sharpen your students’ poetry skills in no time.

Fun and engaging poetry activities to try

Teaching students about poetry can be an engaging and creative experience. Here are a few ideas for poetry activities that you can find on TPT to help you introduce and explore the world of poetry with your students:

Poetic Device Scavenger Hunt

Distribute some poems and have students identify and highlight poetic devices like similes, metaphors, alliteration, onomatopoeia, and imagery. Discuss what these are and the overall impact on the reader's experience.

Poetry Analysis Jigsaw

Divide students into small groups, assigning each group a different poem. Have each group analyze the assigned poem's themes, tone, and literary devices, and present their findings to the class.

Poetry Slam or Performance

Organize a poetry slam where students can perform poems they’ve written themselves or those written by famous poets. This will help build confidence and strengthen their public speaking skills.

Writing Poetry from Different Perspectives

Ask students to write a poem from the perspective of an inanimate object or an animal to foster empathy and encourage creative, out-of-the-box thinking.

Creating Found Poetry

Provide magazines, newspapers, or online articles. Have students cut out interesting words and phrases, and use them to create their own unique poems.

These (and other!) activities can help deepen your students’ appreciation for poetry and enhance their creative writing skills.
