Painless Plans for the Elementary Music Substitute
These are UPDATED plans I leave for my substitute! I never know if I am going to have a "music person" in my room so these plans are do-able for ANY substitute teacher.
I have a "Sub Tub" which contains the supplies mentioned on the paper. Those include pipe cleaners, books, CDs, sidewalk chalk and worksheets. The other supplies are easily seen in open storage around the room.

Booker T Washington vs WEB DuBois
Students read a short bio of both men, then fill out an organizer comparing their objectives and strategies before analyzing a poem about the 2 men by Dudley Randall. Students retain the information well and good discussion is generated by the poem and an opinion question.

This activity examines the "triangular trade" between the American colonies, England and Africa. The reading focuses on slavery and why the trade routes were in a triangle. Tall Tale Lesson: John Henry +10 Reading Comprehension Multiple Choice Questions
In this mini-lesson students read a selection to see why a folk song was written about the tall tale hero, John Henry. Then they answer ten multiple choice questions by putting a circle around each correct answer.
