Description

Both men wanted the same outcome: Respect, dignity, and equality for African Americans. However, they disagreed on how to achieve that and how it would look. Here students analyze 8 quotes from these two influential men, about 4 different topics: Race relations, education, economics, and violence. Students compare the different philosophies and arrive at a better understanding of each leader's ideas, in particular those of Malcolm X, who they often erroneously assume was far more militant and violent than he actually was. This is a great way to use primary sources in a way that is not overwhelming, and can lead to great class discussion. After analyzing the documents, students are asked to write a 2 paragraph response comparing and contrasting the men and their philosophies.
