UIL Elementary Number Sense practice book part 2
These are practice lessons I have put together to work with 4th and 5th graders on the second section of the Number Sense test (questions 20-40) for UIL.
Lessons include: converting fractions/decimals/percentages, prime numbers, LCM and GCD, ratios, adding and subtracting fractions, comparing fractions, and squares.
Please note, this is meant to be used with students AFTER they have mastered the lessons in the first practice book I have created.

Students read a short bio of both men, then fill out an organizer comparing their objectives and strategies before analyzing a poem about the 2 men by Dudley Randall. Students retain the information well and good discussion is generated by the poem and an opinion question.

The American Colonies and Slavery: Triangle Trade Map and Reading
This activity examines the "triangular trade" between the American colonies, England and Africa. The reading focuses on slavery and why the trade routes were in a triangle. In this mini-lesson students read a selection to see why a folk song was written about the tall tale hero, John Henry. Then they answer ten multiple choice questions by putting a circle around each correct answer. Along with two colorful drawings of John Henry being a steel driving man, you get two pages of informational text and three stanzas of the John Henry folk song. American Slavery: Slave Hymns / Spirituals / Work Songs
Always a great activity. Students analyze the lyrics of famous slave spirituals for their religious and social covert meanings. Providing some context for younger students may be helpful, but students enjoy trying to decipher the meaning of songs that provided hope, encouragement, and directions to generations of slaves.
