This is a powerful lesson for students to see a modern connection to the past.Before this lesson, you should discuss with students how the North was complicit in slavery as much as the South was in the years prior to the Civil War. Northerners profited greatly off the backs of slave labor, whether they would have wanted to admit it or not. I use this checklist for "We Didn't Start the Fire" as an introduction to the Cold War.
