Do we benefit from slavery today, as the North did in the 1800s?
This is a powerful lesson for students to see a modern connection to the past.Before this lesson, you should discuss with students how the North was complicit in slavery as much as the South was in the years prior to the Civil War. Follow the Drinking Gourd - History and Sing-Along
My students love a good mystery and really love secret codes. They get so excited to learn code songs and any song for that matter where the words have a double meaning.
I use "Follow the Drinking Gourd" and an introduction to African American music and then our unit progresses to spirituals and freedom songs.
