Students read, annotate, and connect the lyrics of Sia's "Kill and Run" from the 2013 film soundtrack to the end of chapter 7. As they do, they'll better understand the complexities of Myrtle's death including who shoulders the blame and what her death symbolizes. This also includes a scaffolding activity to decode symbols in the novel, specifically the Eyes of T. J. Eckleburg. You can use this as an assessment at the end of chapter 7. It could be a chance to prove students read the text. It cou

This is a super easy activity from your perspective as a teacher, and a fun little project for students. It's much like the concept of "Blackout poetry" but students will use song lyrics instead. From a list of 35 songs (on the handout) they will choose 2 lyrics from ~10 of the songs and then write their "own" song around those lyrics. This takes the pressure off of the daunting task of just writing a 100% original song, and it also challenges the students to make meanings and connections amo
